Perhaps there are no social justice issues more crucial today than the issues of ethical consumption.

We should be concerned with the fact that 2 billion people around the world live on less than 2 dollars a day and 1 billion people live on less than 1 dollar a day.

We should respond to the fact that our natural environment is being destroyed as consumption is on the rise.

We should speak up about the fact that workers are denied wages and gross inequities between the rich and poor are more unfair.

We should consider adjusting our lifestyles based around our knowledge of the cruelty shown to animals at commercial farms and slaughterhouses.

One of the many reasons why the Jewish people have had such tremendous social impact throughout history has been that we have operated on the periphery of society. We are the paradigmatic outsiders. However, today in America, we are insiders. So we must ask: how can we be insiders but continue to play the social agitator role of outsider.

It is my belief that civil disobedience is one area where we can and must continue to raise our voices to protest wrongs and make our moral voices heard. It is also a way that we ensure that we continue to operate on a grassroots level and not conform through a purely top-down approach.

In these two videos, you will see me getting arrested in front of the United Nations with Rav Avi Weiss when Ahmadinejad was arriving to speak (the president of Iran who has called for the destruction of Israel and tortured thousands of innocent individuals).
